According to El Heraldo, the devastating Hermosillo fire that broke out at a Waldo’s store in downtown Sonora’s capital — leaving 23 people dead and 11 injured — has sparked nationwide grief. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo expressed her condolences and sorrow through her official social media accounts, calling it “a tragedy that hurts all of Mexico.”

Sheinbaum confirmed that she has been in direct contact with Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño to coordinate federal support for victims and ensure immediate medical attention for those injured.

The president also instructed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez to dispatch a specialized federal team to assist victims, provide emergency resources, and support ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Hermosillo fire. I have asked the Secretary of the Interior to provide full support to state authorities,”
wrote Sheinbaum on X (formerly Twitter).

Hermosillo Fire Leaves 23 Dead

The fire erupted Saturday afternoon at a Waldo’s store in Hermosillo’s Centro district following a powerful explosion that quickly engulfed the building.

Initial reports indicate the flames started near the main entrance, trapping dozens of customers and employees inside.

The blaze spread rapidly, resulting in 23 fatalities and 11 injuries, several of them severe.

Governor Alfonso Durazo described the event as “a day of profound sadness for all Sonorans.” He confirmed that injured individuals are being treated at hospitals across Hermosillo and that several of the victims were children.

Federal Aid Ordered by Sheinbaum

Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that her administration is fully committed to supporting Sonora after the Hermosillo fire. She instructed federal agencies to work alongside local authorities to assess damages, assist families, and reinforce emergency response systems.

Federal sources confirmed that the response team includes medical personnel, victim assistance experts, and forensic specialists to aid in post-fire assessments.

The federal government also pledged to oversee a transparent investigation into the fire’s cause, in coordination with state authorities.

“Victim support and justice will remain our top priorities,” Sheinbaum said.

Durazo Announces Investigation Into the Hermosillo Fire

Durazo confirmed an “exhaustive and transparent investigation” is underway to determine the cause of the explosion and identify those responsible.

“We deeply mourn the loss of human lives, especially those of children. In Sonora, the life and safety of our people will always remain an absolute priority,” the governor stated.

He also thanked President Claudia Sheinbaum and Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez for their swift response and solidarity with the people of Sonora.

Authorities continue to examine whether the fire was triggered by an electrical fault, a vehicle, or flammable materials stored inside the establishment.

National Mourning for the Hermosillo Fire

The Hermosillo fire has prompted an outpouring of solidarity across Mexico. Governors, public officials, and citizens shared messages of support while emergency crews continued recovery efforts and medical care for survivors.

Hundreds of Hermosillo residents gathered near the site, lighting candles and placing flowers in honor of the victims.

The tragedy, which unfolded over the weekend, has been described as one of the deadliest incidents in Hermosillo’s recent history.

The federal government reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, justice, and comprehensive victim support — vowing to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
