The authorities in Indiana have scheduled the execution of Joseph Corcoran, 49, for next Wednesday, December 18.
This would be the first execution in the state in 15 years, sparking debates over the death penalty and the use of drugs for lethal injections.
Corcoran was sentenced to death in 1999 for the murder of his brother and three other men in 1997, according to The Associated Press.
Court records state that he committed the crimes after overhearing a conversation he believed was criticizing him.

His lawyers now argue that he suffers from severe paranoid schizophrenia, which could make his execution unconstitutional.

The state plans to use pentobarbital as the lethal drug but has not disclosed its source, citing confidentiality under Indiana law.
This practice has been criticized for its lack of transparency, as such processes require oversight to ensure proper handling.

The execution will take place at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, east of Chicago, according to The Associated Press.
Attendance will be limited to a small group, including prison officials, medical staff, a spiritual advisor, and up to eight family members of the victims.
