A landslide triggered by heavy rains completely destroyed a village in the Marra Mountains, in western Sudan.

The toll is devastating: more than 1,000 people died, and only one survivor was found among the rubble.

The tragedy occurred on August 31, after several days of torrential rains saturated the ground and set off the catastrophe.

“The village has now been completely wiped out,” reported the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army in a statement released through Reuters.

The disaster struck the Darfur region, under the control of the movement led by Abdelwahid Mohamed Nour.

Among the victims were men, women, and children buried under the avalanche with no chance to escape.

Reports described scenes of total destruction, with homes reduced to piles of earth and scattered debris.

The magnitude of the landslide has devastated an area already scarred by the civil war that has plagued the country for two years.

Refugees Trapped in the Tragedy After Sudan Landslide

Most of the village’s inhabitants were displaced people fleeing violence in Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur state.

They sought refuge in the Marra Mountains, a place considered safer from the fighting.

However, the region lacks basic services, food, and medicine, which worsened conditions for those sheltering there.

The disaster struck a population without resources to endure or the capacity to respond immediately.

An Unprecedented Humanitarian Crisis

The war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has unleashed a humanitarian crisis of extreme proportions.

According to Reuters, more than half of Sudan’s population faces critical levels of hunger.

Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes amid fighting and insecurity.

This landslide in Sudan now adds to a scenario already overwhelmed by armed conflict and insufficient aid.

Urgent Call to the International Community

The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army called for immediate support from the UN and international humanitarian aid agencies after the landslide.

Their request seeks resources to recover the victims’ bodies and provide relief to survivors in the area.

“The magnitude of the tragedy exceeds local capacities,” the group said in its statement.

The appeal underscores the urgency of action in an isolated region where humanitarian access is limited and risks continue to rise.

The civil authority in areas controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdelwahid, revealed that all residents of the village of Tarsin in central Jebel Marra died due to landslides on Sunday. The Only Survivor of the Landslide in Sudan

So far, only one person has been found alive after the landslide in Sudan.

The survivor was rescued from the remains of what was once the village.

Their story symbolizes the fragile hope that persists amid so much devastation and grief.

Meanwhile, nearby communities fear that new rains could trigger further disasters in the mountainous region, El Heraldo de México reported.
