November signals the end of the Atlantic hurricane season, but long-term meteorologists warn that tropical threats might not be over yet.

Alex DaSilva, a hurricane expert at AccuWeather, has pointed out that between one to three named storms could form before the official season wraps up.

«We’ve been saying it since the start of the season, even before releasing our initial forecast in March,» DaSilva stated, emphasizing that November could bring more tropical activity than expected.

And while the official end of the season is near, a tropical development in December cannot be ruled out.

November Could Bring Multiple Tropical Storms

The last storm recorded in December was Olga in 2007, and the possibility of another event forming before year’s end is a concern for experts.

The risk of tropical impact in the U.S. remains, especially for vulnerable states like Florida and the Carolinas.

«We’re concerned that Florida and the Carolinas, already heavily affected this season, could face another tropical impact,» DaSilva explained.

These areas have already experienced extreme conditions and, in some cases, significant damage, so new tropical storms could worsen the situation.

Current oceanic conditions are one of the main reasons this forecast remains active.

Atlantic and Caribbean ocean temperatures are above historical averages, which supports the potential for new storm formation and intensification.

Additionally, the Gulf of Mexico presents zones of warm water, which also increases the likelihood of tropical development.

A crucial factor in this forecast is the low wind shear, which allows tropical storms to grow without wind currents disrupting their development.

«The lack of shear facilitates storm development and growth in intensity,» DaSilva added, highlighting the importance of this element in tropical system formation.

AccuWeather meteorologists are paying close attention to activity in the Caribbean, where current conditions suggest the possible formation of a storm in early November.

If this materializes, it will be named Patty, the next on the list for Atlantic basin tropical storms.

After Patty, the designated names are Rafael and Sara, completing the 2024 season’s list.
