A Pattern of Road Tragedies in the Country

Other injured passengers were released shortly after receiving basic medical attention.
This type of road tragedy is not isolated in Mexico or Latin America.
Bus accidents occur frequently, claiming the lives of hundreds of people every year.
The Mexican government’s most recent report counted 12,099 accidents on federal highways during 2023.
Mexico Faces Safe Mobility Challenge
Those crashes resulted in 6,400 injuries and nearly 1,900 deaths, along with millions in material losses.
Just this past February, another accident left more than 40 dead in the south of the country.
That crash involved a bus traveling to Tabasco from Cancún that collided with a trailer.
After the impact, the vehicle caught fire, causing one of the deadliest road tragedies of the year.
Railway Future and Road Safety in Debate
Buses are one of the main modes of transportation in Mexico, especially for intercity routes.
Millions of people rely on them to travel between states, given the limited passenger rail network.
Freight train transport is common, but passenger rail infrastructure has been reduced for decades.
President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government seeks to reverse this situation with an ambitious railway plan.
