The United States believes that next week, during negotiations in Cairo, an agreement between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip could be reached.

This includes the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, according to a senior US official who spoke to the press.

This source indicated that, although the process is «complicated,» the mediators – the United States, Qatar, and Egypt – are confident that Israel and Hamas can conclude «once and for all» the negotiations.

This, over the next round in the Egyptian capital, reported by the EFE news agency.

The official’s optimism is based on the proposal presented by the United States, with the support of Qatar and Egypt, this Friday.

During the negotiations held in Doha over the last two days, which the mediators described as «constructive» in a joint statement.

In that statement, they explained that the United States has put forward a proposal «that bridges the gaps» between Israel and Hamas.

And that «allows for a rapid implementation of the agreement.»

When Could the Hostages Be Released?

The statement, however, does not include details on how the release of the Israeli hostages, who have been in the Gaza Strip since the Hamas attack on October 7, will be carried out.

Nor does it specify how many Palestinian prisoners will be released.

It also does not specify when the ceasefire will take effect or how the entry of humanitarian aid into the enclave will be guaranteed.

Shortly after the negotiations concluded in the Qatari capital, US President Joe Biden spoke by phone separately with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the President of Egypt, Abdelfattah al-Sisi.

How Are the Negotiations Going?

According to the aforementioned US official, who spoke to the press on condition of anonymity, the consensus among the three leaders is that the negotiations are in their «final phase.»

«I believe there was a consensus among the three leaders that this process, which obviously has been underway for months, is now in its final phase,» he stated.

To finalize the process, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Israel tomorrow, Saturday, to continue with «intense diplomatic efforts.»

These are aimed at reaching an agreement, as detailed by the State Department in a statement.

What Does Biden Say About This Possible Ceasefire in Gaza?

Blinken, who has made multiple visits to the region since the start of the conflict in Gaza last October, will extend his tour to other countries in the area, according to the senior official mentioned.

For now, the State Department has not specified which other countries Blinken will visit or when.

Last week, the US leader held individual calls with the leaders of these two countries, where he discussed progress in the negotiation.

Biden agreed to remain in «close contact» both with Egyptian President Abdelfattah al-Sisi and with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as reported by the White House. WITH INFORMATION FROM EFE.
