A federal operation in Key Largo, Florida, ended in an episode that is now circulating widely on social media and prompting questions about detention protocols.

A woman, who was later confirmed to be a US citizen, was forcibly removed from her vehicle while desperately screaming that she was a “US citizen,” according to a video published by the Miami Herald.

The incident took place on Wednesday, December 3, and was recorded by reporter David Goodhue, who captured the moment several agents dragged the woman — dressed in medical scrubs — from her parked vehicle on the side of a busy highway.

As the agents restrained her on the pavement, the woman cried out for help.

In the video, the woman can be heard loudly pleading: “I’m a US citizen, please help me!” as federal agents pull her from the vehicle and pin her to the ground to arrest her.

Amid her verbal resistance, she continues insisting: “Why are you doing this to me?” — a question that has intensified the debate over use of force and the limits of procedure.

The fact that the detained woman was wearing medical scrubs adds an additional layer of impact, amplifying discussion about treatment, proportionality, and how identity checks are executed during internal immigration or border enforcement operations within U.S. territory.

The official version: refusal to identify herself and vehicle search

According to a spokesperson for US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the intervention happened after the woman allegedly refused to provide her driver’s license and refused to roll down her window when stopped.

That refusal, CBP stated, led agents to remove her from the vehicle, place her in their patrol unit, and proceed with a search of the car.

During that search, agents found her driver’s license and confirmed that she was indeed a US citizen. After this verification, the woman was released, according to the Miami Herald.

Unanswered questions following her release

Although CBP’s statement frames the procedure as a direct consequence of the driver’s initial refusal, the video raises questions about the proportionality of the force used — especially considering that she was never charged with a crime and was released once her identity was confirmed.

The case has now become a flash point in the ongoing debate over federal practices during internal border-related stops, particularly in regions like the Florida Keys where agents operate under border-security jurisdiction.

The viral spread of the US citizen arrest video may lead to calls for protocol reviews, as well as broader discussions surrounding civil rights, identification, and limits of federal authority.
