According to Heraldo de México, in a shocking event that has stunned all of India, famous cobra handler JP Yadav, known on social media as “Sarp Mitra” — meaning “friend of the snakes” — lost his life after being bitten by a cobra during a relocation task in Vaishali District, Bihar State.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, July 6, but the footage only recently went viral, showing the man’s final moments as he carried out what would become his last rescue.

The video, widely shared on social platforms, shows Yadav facing the snake with his trademark calm and precision. Kneeling, he tries to control the visibly agitated reptile, managing to dodge an initial strike.

Seconds later, he grabs the cobra and, in a display of pride, lifts it up before dozens of onlookers fascinated by his work.

However, the cobra partially breaks free and bites Yadav’s hand, injecting its potent venom in seconds.

Yadav, known for rescuing snakes found in residential areas, used to relocate them safely to prevent human-animal conflicts. On his social media, he shared educational videos and frequently reminded followers to keep a safe distance from venomous species.

After the bite, the handler continued working, trying to place the reptile inside a plastic container for transport — but he began to visibly weaken.

The footage shows him suddenly collapsing, while the cobra escapes from the container, causing panic among the crowd.

For several minutes, Yadav’s body remained motionless on the ground as no one dared approach — the snake was still moving nearby.

Fear of suffering the same fate paralyzed the witnesses, who waited until the reptile slithered away.

When it was finally safe, Yadav’s assistants rushed to lift him and tried to take him to the nearest hospital, but it was too late.

Medical personnel could only pronounce him dead.

Local reports state that the venom acted swiftly, leaving no time to administer antivenom.

Cobras of this species contain neurotoxic venom that attacks the nervous system, causing paralysis and respiratory failure within minutes if left untreated.

JP Yadav was widely admired in rural communities of northern India. His rescue work helped prevent countless encounters between residents and venomous snakes — a frequent problem in densely populated regions where these reptiles often enter homes or streets.

He was also known for his charismatic style and his educational mission. In every post, he reminded his audience of the importance of respecting wildlife and promoting coexistence with native species.

Dangers of handling venomous animals

Authorities in Bihar State have urged extreme caution among volunteers involved in the rescue of dangerous animals, especially those lacking proper equipment or professional supervision.

Wildlife experts emphasize that traditional “snake charmers,” though admired for their skills, face lethal risks if they do not use modern safety and containment tools.

Yadav’s case reignites debate over the lack of regulation in these activities and the urgent need for official training and safety protocols.

His death leaves not only deep sorrow among his followers but also a stark reminder of the limits of human contact with venomous creatures, even for those who dedicate their lives to protecting them.
