A man died on the night of December 31, 2025, after an armed confrontation with an off-duty federal agent outside an apartment complex in Northridge, in the San Fernando Valley.

The incident occurred amid New Year’s celebrations and alarmed residents who initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks.

The deceased, approximately 30 years old, was firing an assault rifle into the air when he was fatally shot by an off-duty agent with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) who lives in the same complex.

The incident took place between 10:30 p.m. and 11:37 p.m. on December 31.

The events occurred in the 17700 block of Roscoe Boulevard, inside the Valley Pointe Apartments complex, near Amestoy Avenue.

According to available information, the ICE agent was off duty and inside his residence when he heard gunshots.

Upon noticing the gunfire, the agent responded from within the residential complex, according to Univision.

A statement from the Department of Homeland Security said the officer identified himself as law enforcement.

The agent verbally ordered the armed man to lower his weapon. The suspect refused to comply.

The man then fired at least three shots toward the federal agent.

After the shooting, the agent returned to his apartment and put on a ballistic vest.

He then immediately contacted authorities to report what had occurred.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers found the man unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The rifle carried by the deceased was recovered at the location. No arrests were made in connection with the incident.

The agent involved cooperated fully with authorities from the outset.

The investigation is being led by the LAPD with support from DHS.

As of now, the identity of the deceased has not been released.
