The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon during the demolition work, according to local authorities.

The bridge, located over the Strong River on State Route 149, was approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Jackson.

It had been closed to traffic since September 18 as part of a replacement project being managed by the contractor TL Wallace Construction.

According to the state Department of Transportation, the contractor was in the process of demolishing the bridge to replace it with a new one.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation issued a press release explaining that the bridge was being replaced when the accident occurred.

Despite the safety measures in place, the Mississippi bridge collapse took both workers and authorities by surprise, according to The Associated Press.

Emergency teams arrived quickly to assist those affected, but three people could not be saved. The four injured were transported to nearby hospitals with severe injuries, and there are concerns for the survival of some of them.

Transportation Department spokeswoman Anna Ehrgott stated that the agency “would share more information with the public as it becomes available.”

The department also mentioned that one of its inspectors was on-site during the bridge collapse but was unharmed.
