U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday the imposition of a 100% tariff on imports of chips and semiconductors, with the goal of forcing the domestic manufacturing of these components.

During an event in the Oval Office, Trump explained that companies like Apple that commit to manufacturing these products within the United States will be exempt from the new tariff.

The president emphasized that this measure is meant to strengthen the U.S. industry and attract the production of key technological components that, in his view, must be made domestically.

The announcement, made alongside Apple CEO Tim Cook, highlights Trump’s strategy to reduce reliance on advanced technology imports.

Tariffs on Chips and Semiconductors: A Major Shift

Trump stated that if implemented, the 100% tariff would apply to all chips and semiconductors entering the country—thereby boosting the return of domestic production.

The decision aligns with the president’s protectionist policies, aimed at revitalizing American manufacturing and reducing trade deficits with other countries.

In response, Apple announced a significant investment in the United States in an effort to avoid the tariffs. The company committed to increasing its U.S. investments to $600 billion over the coming years.

The tech giant will expand its domestic production and create more jobs as part of the agreement. This will allow Apple to remain exempt from the sanctions imposed by Trump.

U.S. Investment

This partnership underscores the growing pressure President Trump is placing on major corporations to manufacture within U.S. borders, as part of his broader economic recovery strategy.

Trump affirmed that the tariffs will benefit American workers and the national economy, according to EFE and Telemundo.

At the same time, it will reinforce national security by reducing dependence on critical tech components made abroad.

With this policy, Trump aims to ensure that the United States reclaims its position as a global leader in the production of chips and semiconductors—essential components in the tech industry worldwide.
