Tom Noonan, the actor remembered for his roles in RoboCop 2, Manhunter, and Last Action Hero, has died at the age of 74.
The news was made public on Wednesday, February 17, and has sparked reactions among colleagues and fans following the announcement.

His death was confirmed by Karen Sillas, his co-star in the stage production What Happened Was…, and by director Fred Dekker, who worked with him on The Monster Squad.
According to people close to the actor, he passed away “peacefully” on Valentine’s Day.
So far, the cause of the Tom Noonan’s death has not been disclosed.
From Greenwich to Cult Cinema: Who Was Tom Noonan?
Tom Noonan was born on April 12, 1951, in Greenwich, Connecticut. His father, John, was a jazz musician and dental surgeon, while his mother, Rita, worked as a mathematics teacher, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
He began his career in theater, participating in the original off-Broadway production of Buried Child.
However, he soon transitioned to film, where he built a distinctive reputation for portraying complex and unsettling villains.
One of his most memorable roles was that of serial killer Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter, the first film to feature the character Hannibal Lecter.
In 1987, he starred in The Monster Squad, solidifying his presence in genre cinema long before his death saddened fans.
‘RoboCop 2’ and ‘Last Action Hero’: The Villains That Defined Him
In 1990, Tom Noonan portrayed drug kingpin Cain in RoboCop 2, a key character within the franchise’s dystopian universe.
Three years later, he played “The Ripper” in Last Action Hero, adding another memorable antagonist to his résumé.
Regarding his work in The Monster Squad, Fred Dekker wrote on social media:
“With great sadness, I share the passing of Tom Noonan… Tom’s indelible performance as Frankenstein in THE MONSTER SQUAD is the highlight of my modest filmography, undoubtedly aided by the masterful makeup designed by Stan Winston, sculpted by Tom Woodruff Jr., and applied by Zoltan Elek.”
In addition to these roles, he appeared in films such as Heat and Synecdoche, New York, and voiced most of the characters in the animated film Anomalisa.
Theater, Directing, and Television: A Career Beyond the Villain

Noonan not only acted—he also wrote, directed, and starred in the film What Happened Was…, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 1994.
On television, he left his mark with appearances in series such as The X-Files, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Special Victims Unit, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Damages, Hell on Wheels, Tales From The Darkside, and in his later years, 12 Monkeys (2015–2018).
In his personal life, he was married to actress Karen Young from 1992 until their divorce in 1999.
He is survived by his daughter Wanda and a son.
With more than four decades of career achievements, Tom Noonan built a unique profile within American cinema.
His ability to embody unsettling characters and his versatility across different formats solidified a legacy that, for many, will remain an essential part of cult and genre filmmaking, even after Tom Noonan’s death.
